List it out
Start by identifying the items in your bathroom which you consider essential and what are the excess or indulgence items. By doing this, you'll be able to plan what to allocate money to from your budget, and even just figure out what you have room for. For example, underfloor heating would be great to have, however you may not find it as essential as a good shower head! Or if you find your small on space, although a large vanity would be nice to have, would it make the room too tight to be practical?
Find the best tradesmen
Don't always look for the cheapest tradesmen to complete your renovation. Ask family or friends or take to social media to get recommendations. Once you've narrowed it down to a few options, take a look at their past work and reviews to help you make your final decision. It is important to know you can trust the team working on your new bathroom. Don't forget to check their availability, especially if you need the job done by a certain time. Once you've contacted the tradesmen, you may find they're booked out for a long time.
How long will it take from start to finish?
There is no exact time frame for this, but as a guide, in Sydney it can take anywhere between 4 to 8+ weeks to complete depending on the size and complexity of the project.
For a bathroom renovation to run smoothly and take minimal time, you'll need project management, effective communication with both trades and suppliers, and be able to organise materials and tradesmen in alignment with one another. You'll also need to take into consideration the lead time of products, including floor and wall coverings, and tradesmen availability.
Plan your colours and style
Choosing the perfect colour scheme and style for new bathroom can either make or break the final design. Neutral and light colours can give the illusion of a larger, open space whereas dark colours such as black or navy can be very striking and bold. Your bathroom should complement the overall style of your home. Consider the colours used in adjacent rooms to create a cohesive look throughout your home.
Choose your vanity size
Install a vanity that suits the size of your bathroom and ensure it has adequate storage space. There are vanity options with drawers or doors or a combination of both. For smaller bathrooms, you may consider forgoing a vanity below the washbasin and using an overhead storage cabinet instead, such as a mirror shaving cabinet which combines both storage and a mirror. If you have a larger bathroom, chose a large vanity to make use of the space and have plenty of storage room for toiletries and towels.
Will you need a bath or just a shower?
The right bathtub is essential, so try before you buy! Visit a showroom so you can see the bath in real life and sit inside the tub to ensure it is comfortable and not too small. Is it long enough and deep enough? Make sure the bathtub fits your space and doesn't make the bathroom feel cramped.
Or have you decided you don't use a bathtub in your household at all, and you can skip it altogether to put that money to a good shower instead? Will your bathroom be big enough to fit a bath? Decide what suits your family and space the best and stick with it. There is no right or wrong!
Choose your toilet style
Buy a good quality toilet and make sure it suits your bathroom design! You can choose from modern sleek styles or go with a classic traditional design. Is the rest of your bathroom traditional, Hamptons, modern, coastal, art deco? And don't forget the functionalities! With rimless bowls for easy cleaning, smart toilets and toilet seats, and even water efficient toilets, do a little bit of research to find out what toilet will work best for your needs.
Don't forget accessories!
Also known as the jewellery of your bathroom, don't forget the beautiful tapware, towel rails, toilet roll holder and mirrors to complete the look. Continue the consistent look using round or square items that complement the shape of your basin, bath or shower and toilet.
