Which is the Best Basin to Buy for Your Bathroom?

Choosing the right basin for your bathroom can be daunting, there are so many options on the market today. In this article, we will delve into the main considerations when purchasing a bathroom basin. We'll cover crucial factors such as the size of the basin, the various installation styles, the materials it's made from and the brands available.

By understanding these elements, you'll be better equipped to choose a basin that meets your needs and complements your bathroom decor.

Bowl size

When selecting a bathroom basin bowl size, consider family size; how many people will be using it, benchtop space, and overall bathroom size. For larger families, a spacious basin is essential to accommodate frequent use. If the bathroom is shared by multiple people, a double basin can be beneficial. Bench space is also crucial; a large basin can dominate the benchtop, leaving little room for toiletries and other essentials. In smaller bathrooms, a compact basin maximises space and maintains a balanced look.

Installation style

Wall Hung

This method is perfect for powder rooms or smaller bathrooms where you don't have room for a vanity, yet you can make the bathroom feel larger by having a small compact basin hung on the wall.

With Pedestal

Perfect for traditional bathrooms where you want a classic look to hide pipework by using a decorative pedestal and may not have room for a complete vanity.

With Basin Stand

This method creates a classic heritage look while allowing the bathroom to feel more spacious due to the open framework of the stand. The top frame bar can also double as a towel rail.

Above Counter

To sit your basin on top of the counter can allow for more benchtop space and is a perfect installation method for a custom vanity because you can decide on basin placement along the countertop.

Undercounter

This is popular method as it allows you to show off more of the bench top. It also looks streamlined and modern, perfect for a sleek minimalistic bathroom.

Semi Recessed

A semi recessed basin is installed into a benchtop with part of the basin protruding out the front. This is perfect if you're limited for space when you don't have a full depth of a bench top to install a large basin, meaning you can install a large basin into a small bench top.

Material Pros Cons
Concrete
Large range of colour options and shapes available. Very strong, will last a very long time if cared for correctly. Can be affordable. High maintenance and cleaning, requires resealing every few years to protect from discoloration and etching.
Acrylic
More budget-friendly compared to other materials. The mouldable nature of acrylic allows for diverse designs. They are easy to clean, and acrylic can dampen sound for a quieter experience. Acrylic is a plastic and doesn't have the durability of other basin materials. Though you can buff out scratches somewhat, it does scratch and gouge easily so abrasive cleaners should not be used on it.
Fireclay

Fireclay is easy to clean and non-porous, therefore stain proof. It is extremely durable and resistant to chips, cracks, and extreme temperatures.
Limited range of colours available and can be expensive compared to other bathroom basin materials.
Porcelain / Vitreous China

More affordable than fireclay for a similar look. Naturally non-porous, making it easy to clean.

Subject to chips and cracks, which can quickly lead to discolouration if not treated immediately.
Solid Surface

Very smooth surface making it easy to clean. As the material is the same throughout the basin, if staining does occur, the surface can be sanded back, revealing the same clean surface below. Solid Surface is susceptible to marking, but is easy to buff off. Can be more expensive than other basin materials.
Mineral Composite

Easy to clean and maintain surface. Impact-resistant, capable of withstanding the rigors of daily use without being damaged.

Can be more expensive than other basin materials, but usually less than Solid Surface. Mineral Composite can be susceptible to marking, but can be buffed off.
