What is a Firing Crack, And How Will it Affect my Fireclay Sink?

At Turner Hastings, we pride ourselves on the exceptional quality, craftsmanship and natural beauty of our fireclay sinks. Each piece is individually crafted using natural materials and time-honoured manufacturing techniques. But occasionally, you might notice a small imperfection – typically a hairline crack or tiny chip on the unglazed underside of your sink.

Before you worry, let us explain: this is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about.

What Is a Firing Crack?

A firing crack is a small surface-level mark that may appear on the underside of a ceramic or fireclay sink during the kiln-firing process. This happens when the natural clay is exposed to extremely high temperatures to harden and strengthen the material. As the sink heats up and then cools down, slight movements in the clay can result in these tiny imperfections – particularly in unglazed areas that are not visible once installed.

Not a Defect, A Sign of Authenticity

These marks are not defects or signs of damage. They do not affect the integrity, structure, or long-term durability of the sink in any way. In fact, they are an inherent characteristic of working with natural clay materials and a reflection of the artisanal nature of the product.

Because fireclay is a natural material, no two sinks are exactly alike – and that's what makes them so special. A firing crack is simply a subtle reminder that your sink wasn't mass-produced – it was crafted with care, fired in a kiln, and finished by hand.

Will It Affect My Sink?

Not at all. Firing cracks are purely aesthetic and occur only in non-visible areas, typically on the underside of the sink where they will be completely hidden after installation. They do not grow over time or compromise the strength or water resistance of your sink.

Every Turner Hastings sink still carries our full warranty, even if a firing crack is present. That's how confident we are in the quality and durability of our products.

Beauty in the Natural Process

We believe there's beauty in authenticity. And just like natural stone or timber, fireclay may feature subtle imperfections that reflect its organic origin. Rather than seeing these as flaws, we encourage our customers to see them as part of the sink's charm – unique features that speak to the quality and individuality of the piece.

In Summary

  • A firing crack is a normal result of the kiln-firing process.
  • It occurs in unglazed areas and is usually on the underside, not visible once installed.
  • It does not affect performance, strength, or longevity.
  • Your sink is still 100% covered under our full warranty.
  • These characteristics are a testament to the natural materials and handcrafted quality of every Turner Hastings sink.

If you have any questions or would like further assurance, our friendly customer service team is always here to help. At Turner Hastings, we stand by the quality of every product we deliver – firing cracks and all.
